We empirically study the effects of broadband internet penetration in the UK on local election outcomes and on local authorities’ policy choices using rich data from 2005-2009. Overall, our findings suggest that internet penetration decreases voters’ turnout and increases the advantage of incumbent parties. In turn, local-government cuts both on expenditures and taxes in areas with greater broadband penetration.
