How is economics organized into subfields, and how do these subfields relate to each other? And how is economics connected with other scientific disciplines? I will present a large-scale scientometric network analysis that addresses these questions. The analysis, based on data for many millions of publications, relies on state-of-the-art network analysis and network visualization techniques developed at my center at Leiden University. In particular, I make use of the Leiden algorithm for community detection in large networks and the VOSviewer software for network visualization. Using these tools, I will analyze the internal structure of the field of economics, focusing especially on the core subfields and their relations with more peripheral research areas. I will also explore connections with other disciplines, and I will show how economic research has evolved in recent years.
