I present work in progress that attempts to answer the question whether women are underrepresented on the editorial boards of economics journals. To do so, we use a unique, hand-collected data set with information on the editorial boards of more than 100 economics journals over the period 1990-2011, including information about editorial roles and gender of board members. We combine this dataset with bibliographical information of all publications and author network data over the period 1970-2011. The data shows that, whereas the percentage of female authors went up from 10.6% to 20.9% over the period 1990-2010, the percentage of female editorial board members rose from 5.9% to 11.2% over the same period. We argue that various definitions of underrepresentation used in the literature are unsuited for the situation under study. We present an alternative, econometric approach. I want to discuss with you our findings and possible improvements in answering the research question.
