Abstract:

In this paper, we evaluate the impact of migrant-induced consumer amenities – like ethnic restaurants, shops and schools – on the attractiveness of cities in the Netherlands. We present the results of a hedonic price model for housing prices in the Netherlands, using Dutch micro data on housing prices, public and private amenities, and municipality administrative data between 1998 and 2008. We apply a 2SLS estimation procedure and explicitly look at the impact of migrant-induced consumer amenities on both the neighbourhood level and the city level. Additionally, we analyse the differences between the utility that immigrants and natives derive from such amenities
