This paper introduces an interesting class of games that provide strategic foundations of epidemiological models. Individual decisions on treatment, immunisation and protective behaviour are based on private objectives and constraints, but have impact on the aggregate evolution of infectious diseases. This drives a wedge between private and public incentives and creates a role for active public policy. The predictions of these strategic models are contrasted with those of classical epidemiology and new insights are derived.
