The lectures by Professor Elhanan Helpman will cover recent developments in international trade and foreign direct investment, including theoretical and empirical studies. After a brief review of traditional trade theory and “new” trade theory, and the empirical challenges to these types of models, we shall discuss the research that has evolved in the last decade. This will include the role of heterogeneous firms, incomplete contracts, labor market frictions, vertical specialization, offshoring and outsourcing.
